LOTF Test!

Remember, your Lord of the Flies test is tomorrow!

The format is 80 multiple choice/matching questions, scantrons will be provided as always.

- Remember, it's important to know who said what during the novel (or who is the most likely to say a particular line - whose personality does it sound like?)
- Your study guide questions, if completed, are going to come in handy. Think back to our class discussions. These are vital to your success on this test!

Your Lord of the Flies Portfolio is due next Monday, 04.27.09. If you have any questions, you can respond here or shoot me an email at cphillips@csisd.org.

Finally, I want to get your reaction to the novel. Love it? Hate it? Why? Tell me!

Good luck tomorrow!

Can you persuade me NOT to give you a test? I think not...

Hey Students -

As promised, here's a brief overview of tomorrow's test and what you should probably (and by probably, I mean DEFINITELY) brush up on between now and then.

The test is 70 multiple choice/matching/true-or-false questions (no short answers or essays!).

- fact, opinion, & nonfact
- difference between an appropriate/inappropriate thesis
- logical fallacies
- ability to identify persuasive techniques in print ads
- using excerpts to identify ethos, pathos, & logos

Hopefully, this clears things up. If you need further clarification (other than specific test questions), go ahead and shoot me an email at cphillips@csisd.org.

Good luck.

Ethos, Pathos, & Logos

Hey Students -

Here is the assignment that we've been working on for the past couple of days in class - identifying ethos, pathos, & logos in advertising.

Your Assignment:
- Find a total of three advertisements (one representing ethos, one for logos, & one for pathos)
- Cut the advertisement out and staple it to a sheet of paper

- On the notebook paper, write a FULL (5-8 sentences) paragraph ANALYZING the advertisement. Be sure your paragraph answers the following questions:

- What is the purpose of this ad?
- Who is the intended audience?
- Why might the advertiser have designed the ad the way they did?
- Is the ad effective? Why/why not?

Remember, this is due AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PERIOD tomorrow. We'll continue our discussion on logical fallacies - look for them when you're watching TV tonight!

Happy hunting,

Phillips

Reminder for Tomorrow

Students -

This is just a reminder that tomorrow we will be working on our research in the library, so come straight to the library rather than the classroom. We'll talk about how to go about looking up information and actually using books (remember those things?) rather than the internet. You will be allowed to use a database source, but I would prefer that you use actual books.

Remember while in the library that you are honors students and should conduct yourselves as such. Look over your topics tonight and have in mind what you would be the most interested in writing about.

See you in the library!

Today's Discussion

1st & 3rd Periods:

We'll briefly discuss this tomorrow before class, just in case you don't get a chance to read this.

After looking over today's discussion that took place in the computer lab, I must say that I am EXTREMELY disappointed for the most part. I take partial responsibility for this in that the directions may have not been made clear enough or emphasized heavily enough. However, after attempting to count the numerous instances where the discussion went horribly off topic or random, pointless comments were made, I lost track. When we do fun things like this, it's to give you a break from sitting in your desk and talking about the book and allowing you to interact with your classmates in a different environment.

Clearly, many of you were unable to handle this. It is great to insert a funny, random comment every now and then, but when over half of the postings become nonsensical, random comments such as "Who likes lemons?" or mentioning that you didn't do the reading for the weekend because you were busy playing XBox 360 the entire weekend it becomes offensive to me. I am doing this to help you. I am definitely not angry, just disappointed because I expected more from Honors students.

Now, don't get me wrong. There were those of you that stayed on task the entire time and I am grateful that you did so. This is not addressed to you at all. Thank you so much.

Your assignment for tomorrow is to completely finish the novel and we'll discuss what happened.

3rd Period Online TKAM Discussion

Students,
You will write FOUR comments. TWO should answer the questions below. TWO should respond to classmates' comments.

Write your FIRST NAME ONLY. If you are responding to a comment, write, "in response to (name)..."

The ground rules:

BE NICE!

Try to write in standard English (not texting or IMing) but I understand that spelling and grammar errors will happen. This is not final-draft quality.

Be thorough with your response and include text evidence. Remember that you are HONORS students!

1) Who is your favorite character? Why?
2) What is your favorite part? Why?
3) Look up some info on the Scottsboro Boys. How is the real-life trial of the Scottsboro Boys similar to/different than the trial in the novel?
4) What are your thoughts of the trial?
5) What is up with the title?
6) What is your favorite quote/line from the novel?
7) Do you have any questions or anything that you don't understand?
