Colby- I believe that the trial was unfair but completely relevant to the racism of the times. Was it wrong, yes, but that was how life was back in the day. There was nothing Atticus could do about it, but he tried because thats what he believes is true in his heart. His children are gonna be good children because they believe everybody is equal in God's eyes. I believe Atticus is an amazing person for standing up for what he believes in. He gained alot of respect from the blacks because of his actions!
- Colby (aka. The Bossssssss)
7. so when mr nathan closed the knot hole w/ cement, y was jem crying? i still dont get that
-libby
I think that this title is somewhat fitting because it is sort off like a mystery because you half to figure out what is means on your own because it only talks about killing a mocking bird once.
"...but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird"
Laura
#5
The title comes from the part when Miss Maudie tells Scout not to shoot a mockingbird with their air-rifles. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy".
So the mockingbirds are innoscent and in the story their are many people that are like the mockingbirds.

My favorite character is Dill. He is hilarious. I love the way he is always random. I mean, who comes up with strip poker on the spot? "We were playin' strip poker up yonder by the fishpool," was my favorite quote from him. He's so funny!
Morgan
atticus is my favorite. ITs because he seems to always know what is right (morally and physically) and what is the right thing to do and he is very greatfull of all that everyone does
"Atticus's eyes filled with tears. He did not speak for a moment. 'tell them I'm very grateful,' he said. 'Tell them--tell them they must never do this again. times are too hard."
-Dillon
I have a lot of thoughts on the trial. i think that the trial is somewhat unreasonable. I mean when Mr.Ewell is questioned by Atticus and it is obvious that Tom Robinson did not rape Maybella. It's also pretty ridiculous how the jury convicted Tom, even after Atticus presented plenty of evidence that would make Tom innocent.
-Eric 3rd
I think that the title of "To Kill a Mockingbird" is very appropriate for the novel. Killing a mockingbird is a sin because mockingbirds dont do anything to harm anyone, or eat crops and such. All the mockingbirds do is make pretty music and nice sounds for people. There is a constant relation of people being related to innocent people. Tom Robinson was literally and metaphorically innocent and he was still found guilty because he was black. Another "Mockingbird" is Boo Radley. Boo just sits in his house all day and does nothing to hurt anyone. Yet, people make up rumors about him that arent true.
Justin (aka Bojangles)
I am not really sure why he is crying maybe because it has something to do with his mom dying. I am not sure though.
Laura
Question 2:
I think my favorite parts are when Dill, Scout, and Jem try to come up with great ideas of how to get Boo Radley out of his house and see him. Many of their ideas get them into more and more troubles and problems. Like when Jem lost his pants and Dill replied by saying, "'We were playin' strip poker up yonder by the fishpool,'"
-Ana-
1. My favorite character is Atticus, because he is a real good boy. He stays out of trouble and he seems to be the only grown man in Maycomb county that is somewhat inteligent- Cody&Isaac
marco-my favorite character is atticus, because he is very calm and never backs down no matter how bad things get
2. I think my favorite book is the trial part because it had a twisted ending to it when attius lost the trial. Even tho it look like he was winning.
-Danny

I think the trial was unfairly judged. Tom should of not been convicted. They should have picked a wider variety of people for the jury. "A court is only as sound as the jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up." page 205
Jessica
4. I believe that the trial was rigded I think that Mr. Robinson should have been set free. That the jury needed to do the right thing and to put Mr. ewull should have been behind bars. I think it just shows how bad it was in the 1930's
-Ben
5) My favorite part is when they are trying to see into The Radley House and they get shot at because it is the most intense part of the book besides the very end. -Danielle
1.
My favorite character is Atticus because he is so much like a wise-man. He seems to know much about the world and clues Scout in on things through a very well educated man's point of view. One time is when hes starts off sayingto Jem, "You still have many miles to go son."
Scott
Eric -
I completely agree with you. Many critics of the novel have stated that this is probably the most unrealistic section of the novel in that the evidence is WAY too convincing for Tom Robinson to be convicted of the crime he has been accused of.
Mr. Phillips
My favorite character is Boo Radley. I like Boo because he has an amazing name, BOO haha did I scare you? Anyways, I like that Boo stays insde all the time and has lots of time to himself. I believe that he is good at heart but people just have a bad conception of him.
Justin (aka Bojangles)
2. my favorite part is when dill asks scout to marry her and she "beats him up a few times" but he forgets until the end of that summer
-libby
1) My favorite character is Boo Radley beacuse he is this mysterious charcter that comes in and out of the story and makes you wonder if you will ever see him face-to-face.
4) the trial was probably the worst case of false, well, opinion. in the trial the evidence was clear that tom was innocent and that he was not given a fair verdict.
"you could tell that his right arm was a good 12 inches longer than the left"
Do you see the evidence? DO YOU.?!?!?!?
DILLON
In response to Andrea, I agree that the title appropriate. Their are many people in the story that are "mockingbirds" as in this case. Naming some being Boo, he doesn't harm anybody. Being Atticus, only helps people, never harms. Being Tom Robinson, always helped the Ewells, never harmed. So in all, i agree with Andrea over the title of this story.
In response to question 1.
My favorite character in To Kill A Mockingbird has to be Boo Radley. First off his name is pretty Rad. (get it?)
Boo Radley is a mysterious character in this book. Throughout the book, there are various rumors about him, but the truth cannot often be found. Boo doesnt come out of his house very often, and if he ever does, its at night. You never know what Boo will do next, and that is why I like him so much.
-Brianna!-

My favorite part was when Ralph Nader flew in on his jetpack and battled John Mcain. Mcain ran away like the "maverick" he really is. Ralph Nader 2012!
Nader

The trial against Tom Robinson wasn't fair, some of the people who live in Maycomb are racist and they automaticly believed that Tom was guilty when all the evidence pretty much proved that he was innoscent. We can tell that Mr. Ewell did it but the jury decided that they would make Tom the guilty one even though it is clear that Mr.Ewell has done it.
andrea
when r we watching the movie on this mr phillips?

The Scottboro Bays trial was very similar. First off, everyone thought they knew who would win even before it started. They were also all sentenced to life, except for the 12 year-old, who had a mistrial. I think that this jury was even more racist the the book's.
Source:http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/FTrials/scottsboro/SB_acct.html
Morgan
I would defiantly say that Calpurnia is my favorite character. She basically defies all of the "Rules". A normal black woman would never speak to the children like Cal does. She is so sweet and kind, and even takes the kids to her church when Atticus is away. She is always there for the children and is constantly giving advice to them about every day things that the children are too young to understand.
7. Why did Mr. Robinson run away?
my favorite character is Dill because he is so random and he is really funny. I like how you never know what he will come up with. He is like the author of the story but in a character form because he is the one that created almost all the games and he is very creative.
laura
marco- my favorite part of the book is the trial when tom robinson finally went onto the witness stand and what i think is the real story to the trial.
in response to whoever said that boo radley was their favorite charachter i agree with you. he is so mysterios in so many ways. we dont even know if he is human or alive.
THE BID D
I'm not sure why Jem was crying but I think its because he feels like he lost a friend -Danielle
Question 3:
Well, the Scottboro Case weas similar to Tom Robinson's trial because it had to do with 9 black boys being accused by raping a white girl. 6 boys denied raping of ever seeing the girls, but 3 of them claimed they did because of beatings and threats that had to do with gang violence. But then, one of the other black boy's quoted, "They all raped her, everyone of them." A local newspaper claimed the case to be "so conclusive as to be almost perfect."
-Ana
Nader 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6. My favorite quote is when Mr. Radley is talking about how he shot the black out of someone. I laughed so hard I started crying. - Cody&Isaac
wow brianna that joke was ah-mazing!! i would type an awesome smiley face but mr phillips is a blog nazi(i would have put one there too) just kidding mr phillips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh dont get me started on OBAMA. The only difference in OBAMA and OSAMA is the B.S.
Obama for prez 2012

OBAMA!!!!!!!!
<3 i luv u!!!!!!!
In response to Jessica,
I also think that the trial was not judged fairly. Only certian people were picked to be on the jury, and they didn't even see the real case, just that Tom was black. I think that citizens who are very involved and fair, or even citizens from other close cities should have been on the jury in order to make this trial fair.
-Brianna!-
Dillon
I really agree with you on the trial because are the people blind. I mean really. -Danielle
my comment was the one that starts with
"cody and isaac"
sorry
in response to laura...
I think the title is very fitting to the book, because the book has many "mockingbirds" or innocent people that are accused for doing things they didnt do
ana
Colby-
I agree with you 100%. The trial was 100% racist.
Justin (aka Bojangles)
i think my favorite character is Dill because he is.

my favorite character is Dill also.
He is really random and funny like when he asks Scout to marry him.
andrea
MR P for President!!!!!!!!!
My favorite character of the novel is, without a doubt, Atticus. I believe that he is one of literature's greatest symbols of justice in the face of overwhelming odds. Think of how easy it would be for Atticus to simply treat Tom Robinson's case as any other white citizen of Maycomb would.
Mr. Phillips
In response to Libby-Because he is mad that he won't get anymore gifts.
-Ben
obama sux!
mccain for prez!
In response to Andrea:
I completely agree with you. Every one in Maycomb knew the outcome before it even started. They didn't even give him a chance. Atticus even know that they won't win: "Atticus, are we going to win it?"
"No, honey."
I think that Atticus should have been more optimistic, though. He has good evidence and telling his kids that they won't win isn't helping his case.
Morgan

My favorite part is when Scout said "Atticus, the world's ending" when it was snowing outside. Scout has never seen snow efore and though the sky was falling, or something.
Scott

I think To Kill a Mockingbird is a good name for the title of the book. At the beginning of the novel Scout doesn't have any worries and hasn't seen much racism. At the end of the novel she has seen someone unfairly prosecuted and killed. A mockingbird is an innocent bird that only makes pretty music. In a way, Scout is like a mockingbird at the beginning of the novel.
TENNIS Rules
I think my favorite character is Jem because he free going and free minded. Most of the time does what has to do.
-Danny
My favorite character is Jem, because
he has my name! That makes me feel wise, and old. And he is kind of like me, but i don't play little games like that, i actually HAVE a life! But seriously, jem is THE MAN! (#1)
My favorite part is where jem beat the crap out of Mrs. Dubose's flowers! She deserved it though, because she is old. i laughed when she died! When he beat those flowers up, it showed his awesome manliness. (#2) -Jeremy
I OWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ana,as a response to your question, i think its really wrong that they are trying to get Boo out of his house. I mean, if he wanted to come out, then he would. Obviously he doesn't. so when they are trying all the possible ways to get him out, maybe he is getting aggravated. did that thought ever enter your mind? huh? did it? these kids are selfish, very self centered, and immature. If i was Atticus, i'd whip their butts so hard. Thats all i will say.
-ERIC HAILEY, MCCAIN PALIN '08!!!!
Cody&Isaac
I also laughed when i heard that quote. HILARIOUS. Sounds like southern racism. Well good imagry by Harper Lee anyways.
Justin (aka Bojangles)
The best part in the book so far is the trial because of all the action and drama. The trail was unfair because they said he was guilty just because he was black... I mean come on. The title represents some who is getting blamed for something they didn't do. My favorite character has to be Atticus because he stands beside someone that he knows is going to ruled as guilty but he tries his best and he almost wins.
Tyler
to ana,
yeah I thought that too I mean it is through the whole story but you have to read between the line in a way to find it because it most likely would have taken longer for me to figure it out if someone didn't tell me. But, yes I like the title and think that it is fitting.
laura
in respond to colby the trial was really based on racism atticus really couldnt do anything about it, no matter how much tom robinson was telling the truth he wouldnt win the trial
marco
Colby, i definantly agree with you man. i mean, if this trial was done today, Atticus would have totally won.
Eric
In response to Laura:
I completely agree. It is true about it being a mystery because when you first see the book your like, " Cool, I get to learn how to kill a mockingbird." But that is like the total opposite of the actual plot.
Morgan
mr. phillips,
are the Mrunas? are they like a tribe in Alabama or something? because they just randomly start talking about that. And then in Chapter 24, after they talk about the Mrunas they talk about Helen Robinson...it is soo confusing!
-ana-
in response to tyler
i do think the best part of the book is the trial because it did have a lot of drama in it and so many secrets came out about mr.ewell.
If the people on the jury would be more than just racist farmers then ya atticus would have won but its not like that.
I agree with Cody my favorite quote is when he shot black out of something.
-Ben
yeah what or who are the mrunas
In response to Colby's blog (the very first one), I think it is completely true. There was nothing Atticus, or anybody, could have done about the trial's fairness because of racism of the time. The verdict was wrong, but it was definitely expected.
Scott
2. Our favorite part of the story is the trial of Tom Robinson. This was the most interesting part of the story because you could understand and follow what the author was trying to say. We also thought he was innocent and the jury found him guilty.
I have a question. Why does Atticus tell Jem to go get wrapping paper out of the pantry after he sees Scout with the blanket around her. I think that's kind of random.
Morgan
#7
Why did Mr. Robinson runaway when he had a good chance of getting set free.
-Ben
what chapter is the scotboro bays trail in??
In response to question 6,
"Says if anybody sees a white nigger around, thst's the one"
This line from the book makes me laugh so hard, its not even funny. It is basically saying that this black man was so scared that the blackness faded away and he turned white. Man, what a saying, good job Mrs. Lee!
-Brianna!-
In response to Ana -
The Mrunas, as used in the novel, refer to an African tribe that existed (or may still exist today for all I know). It's Harper Lee's way of criticizing the women of the community for caring so much about African tribes across the ocean but failing to care about black families within their own community.
Mr. Phillips
boo and tom are the two main mockingbirds in this book.. boo gets a bad rep and tom gets wrongly accused(obviously). but wat a lot of ppl realize is that ATTICUS is one too. and anyone who ever thought defense lawyers were in the wrong for defending the accused(of which a lot of ppl just always take for granted that theyre always GUILTY), just read this book.
-libby
-libby
In response to Morgan,
I agree that Dill is the best character in the book. He is always funny. The strip poker lie he made up was the funniest part of the whole novel!
Jessica
7) so in chapter 13, Mrs. Maudie makes a cake for Aunt Alexandria loaded with "shinny". And then later in the chapter it says, "...with their bharts and five quarts of shimmy in their saddlebags..."
what is shinny supposed to be exactly?
-Sarah :)
Scott,
i really liked it when it was snowing and Scout goes, "the world is ending!" it made me laugh. I laugh when somehting's funny in a story.(i would put smiley)
Ana
wait so the scottboro trail isn't even in the book?
andrea
who makes up a game about making fun of somebody i mean really come on+
andrea,
no it is not in the book, it was on the internet that one time.
laura
I think the title of the story comes from when Miss Maudie tells scout not to shoot the mocking birds by saying "Mockingbirds dont do one thing but make music for us to to enjoy". So that represents the innocent people in the story because they havent really done anything to harm anyone.
~Your best student(Keith)
In response to Morgan,
I think Atticus told Jem to go get wrapping paper because he thought he should wrap the blanket and give it back to Mr. Radley. It was random but I think it was one of those things a character just speaks, and does not realize until after he said what he did, that it was riduculous.
-Brianna!-
Mr. Phillips:
ook thanks for answering that. I think that is kind of hypocritical(which is probably what harper lee is trying to prove). It's as if they're saying "oh so these african americans didn't try to make their lives better and are just toughing it out, unlike the ones here in the US"
i agree with Mr.P (aka homeboy) tat attius is a great literature symbol, because he stood up for what he belive in.
GO MR.P
-Danny
In response to Andrea -
Harper Lee loosely based TKAM off of events that occurred in the Scottsboro Trials. There's no mention of it in the book, but if you look at websites containing information on the trials, you may find that it's VERY similar to the proceedings of Tom Robinson's trial.
In response to Danny's comment that Jem is his favorite character, your grammer was atrocious!!!!

-Colby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sucka and btw, #6 is a cool question
Do we need to finish the book tonight? When is the test?
True, i thought it was pretty mean to make fun of the Radleys. I don't mean that i thought what they DID was funny, i thought their IDEAS were funny, not the actual action, because the radleys are pretty much mockingbirds in the story too, and it is mean to annoy innocent people.
-ana-
awww we have to finish the book tonight.

In response to Ana,
I agree that making fun of the Radely's is mean. The people making fun of them are children that don't understand the situation. An adult needed to explain to them why they should not make fun of the Radely's. I think it is Atticus's fault for not telling them.
Just, if you thought I was kidding about getting google earth, I WASN'T!!!!!!!!
Google earth does own, though, but get off!!!!
this has spell check?? no it doesn't??

1) my favorite character has to be atticus, he is so laid back, and looks at things backwards. he lets his children figure out there problems with each other rather than just telling them the answer. he lets them expresive themselves the way they want to express themselves.
i wish i had a dad that was just a little bit like that, atleast he actualy cared...
