So in 1st and 3rd periods we had two amazing discussions on whether or not Rainsford was a murderer. Third period became extremely intense and we decided that we needed a "Stick of Power" (a term that I clearly came up with on my own) for the speaker to hold. The only person that could be speaking for their side had to be holding "The Stick of Power." Come to think of it, we never came to a logical and satisfying conclusion to our argument. I suppose you might want to know which side I'm on. Well, too bad, you'll have to form your own opinion!
So, let's continue the discussion here. Is Rainsford a murderer in every sense of the word? Let's hear what you think!
Finally, your homework for tonight (both periods) is to revise your paragraphs based on the corrections made for tomorrow's peer revision session.
Additionally, please complete the opposite side of the plot chart for the Most Dangerous Game. I promise we'll get around to discussing it, it just won't be tomorrow (but I WILL check!).
Happy writing kids. See you tomorrow.

HEY MR. PHILLIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just wanted to say that I was back and forth through the whole discussion today. I started out on the agree side, then went to the disagree side, then to the middle, then back to the agree side. I could not make up my mind! I think I would be in the middle though. He did purposly kill Zaroff! But he also accidently kill Ivan, but his intentions were to kill Zaroff . So I am not exactly sure which one he is though. I don't know if it was self defense or murder?! I guess I will never really know. Oh well!
Are we supposed to read the story on page 517?

Ahh! I keep forgeting to sign my name and period to each message. Sorry!
I think that Rainsford did commit murder. He intentionaly killed Zaroff. He could have swam somewhere else, but NO. He went to kill Zaroff. Third period rocks!!!!

Please start "To Build a Fire," the story on p. 517 of your textbook. We won't cover it tomorrow but I think you'll find that it's a rather lengthy story so it might help to get a head start on it.
You're correct about Rainsford purposefully killing Zaroff. Many would argue that it would be considered murder after putting up with what Rainsford had to in the jungle but many would also say that he's defending himself.

Thank you Mr. P!
So, I'm not a student, but I still want to comment...
I love the "Stick of Power"! I might need to borrow it when my class does philosophical chairs.
My thoughts: Didn't Rainsford do humanity a huge favor by ridding the world of a monster? Does that still count as murder?

More thoughts...
Rainsford killed--not once but twice.
Thus, he is a murderer.

Rainsford killed not only ivan but intentionally killed Zaroff. Ivan's death was unintentional but that still is murder whether u look at it as "oops my bad," or "oops, he got what he deserved." Rainsford got told that he won and all this stuff, then the quote one dies and one lives and sleeps thing and the dead dude goes to the hounds. Well Rainsford is laying n the bed by the context of the final sentence. Thats all i needed to know to think that he was a murderer or however u spell it. Rainsford had gotten off of the cliff and was able to escape or die down there if he didn't want revenge to kill Zaroff. So Rainsford went back and hid behind the curtains, which gives me evidence that his intention was to kill Zaroff. So in the end he killed Zaroff and Ivan, what a beast. No matter if there was trash talk between them or anything, Rainsford had the chance to escape and die or live happily ever after on the rocks, or he could go kill Zaroff. Two roads and they were not murder, or murder. He purposily went back to Zaroff to kill him. End of discussion, and who cares about Ivan it is substantial that Rainsford kill a man, Zaroff, and thats all i would need to label him as a murder!
3rd period is da bomb, Justin and I are completely correct along with all of the once nuetral people.
PEACE!

Yeah so i typed this real long thing but then somethin happened so now ill say Rainsford is a murderer, he killed Zaroff when he didnt have to, and that me and colby are amazingly right and eric and kieth are being stupid.
ok, well first off, Colby and Justin are just dumb. Second, the disagree side of 3rd period, was DA BOMB! we totally pwnd those nwbs. anyways i still stank on the side i was on because yes, rainsford killed them, but in a completely lawful way. ITS CALLED SELF DEFENSE!!!! you may say, o there were no laws, true but how do we know that? plus Zaroff clearly stated, the rules of the game are simple, kill or be killed. Again you may say, "But rainsford went back to the island to kill Zaroff" we dont know that for sure. maybe, but he would've died trying to swim in the middle of the ocean anyways. Yes Zaroff did say, "congrats you won," but then he clearly says, "one will die, the other wont." simple as that. he initiated that fight. not rainsford. and you have to admit, Zaroff had it coming to him. if rainsford hadnt KILLED him(not murder) then who knows how many other people would've died at Zaroff's grasp. i have considered going to the middle because of all the different cases and stuff but everytime the "agree side" says something we just come back stronger. Plus colby and justin kept undoing everything they said. they're dumb and shouldnt be in honors. so boo. and i totally killed you justin and colby. ill see you tomorow and make sure you ice those major BURNS i just dished out "agree side". Haha
Eric Hailey, 3rd Period
Rainsford is not a murderer
period end of story

Dude, Eric.
Come on man. Zaroff in no way initiated that final fight. Rainsford says, "I'm still a beast at bay" clearly after Zaroff has admitted defeat. Go read the book. Seriously. Geeez...
